How Oilfield Vacuum Degassers Improve Drilling Fluid Performance

Oilfield vacuum degassers are important equipment used in oil and gas drilling operations to treat gas-cut drilling fluids. During drilling, formation gas may enter the drilling mud and affect its density, viscosity, and overall performance. Through negative pressure gas-liquid separation technology, vacuum degassers efficiently remove trapped gas from drilling fluids, restore mud properties, improve drilling safety, and enhance the efficiency of solids control systems.

TRZCQ series vacuum degassers are designed for oil drilling mud degassing. In a complete solids control system, the vacuum degasser is normally installed after the shale shaker to remove residual gases from the drilling fluid after initial solids separation, forming an effective drilling fluid treatment process:

shale shaker → vacuum degasser → desanderdesiltercentrifuge

Working Principle of Vacuum Degasser: Negative Pressure Gas-Liquid Separation

The TRZCQ series vacuum degasser creates a negative pressure environment of -0.04 to -0.08 MPa inside the tank through a vacuum pump. The drilling fluid enters the tank under atmospheric pressure.

The high-speed rotating rotor spreads the mud onto the tank wall, forming a thin liquid layer that helps release gas bubbles trapped inside the drilling fluid. The separated gas is then drawn by the vacuum pump into the gas-liquid separator and discharged through the exhaust pipe.

The treated drilling fluid is discharged from the tank by the impeller and returned to the mud circulation system. This process achieves efficient gas-liquid separation, restores drilling fluid density and viscosity, and helps maintain stable wellbore pressure during drilling operations.

Advantages of Oilfield Vacuum Degassing Equipment

  1. High Gas Removal Efficiency

The TRZCQ series vacuum degasser provides a degassing efficiency of more than 95%. It can remove over 95% of free gas and part of dissolved gas from drilling fluids, including formation gases such as methane and carbon dioxide.

By effectively removing gas from drilling mud, the equipment helps prevent well control problems such as well kicks and blowouts.

With mud processing capacities ranging from 240 to 360 m³/h, the vacuum degasser can meet the requirements of drilling projects with different operating scales.

  2. Flexible Configuration for Different Drilling

The TRZCQ series supports multiple model selections, including TRZCQ240 and TRZCQ300. The tank diameter and processing capacity can be customized according to different drilling requirements, including deep wells and ultra-deep wells.

The vacuum degasser can be integrated into a complete solids control system and operate together with shale shakers, desanders, desilters, centrifuges, and other drilling fluid treatment equipment to achieve closed-loop mud management.

  3. Safe and Reliable Operation

The explosion-proof motor and belt drive system are designed with an offset motor arrangement to lower the equipment center of gravity and ensure stable operation.

The intelligent gas-liquid separator prevents liquid backflow from damaging the vacuum pump. The explosion-proof control cabinet meets ATEX requirements and is suitable for drilling environments containing harmful gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S).

Electrical components from international brands, including Schneider Electric and Siemens, are available to ensure long-term stable operation.

  4. Environmental Benefits and Cost Reduction

Efficient drilling fluid degassing helps improve mud recovery and reduce drilling waste disposal costs. By removing gas and reducing solid particle impact in the drilling fluid system, the vacuum degasser can also reduce wear on drill bits, drill strings, and mud pumps.

This helps extend equipment service life and lower maintenance costs during drilling operations.

Applications of Vacuum Degasser in Drilling and Mud Treatment

  1. Oil and gas drilling

During oil and gas drilling, drilling fluids may be affected by the intrusion of methane, carbon dioxide, and other formation gases. Gas contamination can reduce drilling fluid density, change rheological properties, and affect wellbore stability.

The TRZCQ series vacuum degasser quickly removes gas from drilling fluids, restores mud performance, and helps reduce risks related to well control.

In natural gas exploration, the separated methane can be collected and reused to improve energy utilization.

  2. HDD Drilling and Geotechnical Engineering

In applications such as horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and tunnel boring machine (TBM) construction, efficient mud treatment is important for maintaining stable circulation and construction efficiency.

The TRZCQ series vacuum degasser can work together with other solids control equipment, including vibrating screens and centrifuges, to achieve effective closed-loop drilling fluid management.

  3. Wastewater Treatment and Environmental Applications

Vacuum degassing technology can also be applied in wastewater treatment and environmental protection fields. It can remove gases such as hydrogen sulfide from sludge, reduce odor emissions, and improve the working environment.
