Sludge Dewatering Unit is a key component of the closed-loop system. It assists solids control equipment in removing colloidal particles that cannot be separated by ordinary mechanical devices, making waste mud reusable in drilling operations. If required, the Sludge Dewatering Unit can also be used for waste treatment and final disposal. Chemical-enhanced centrifugation for liquid-solid separation has been widely applied in industrial wastewater treatment. In recent years, abundant research, tests and field application records have been formed in the oil and gas industry. The separation limit of conventional mechanical drilling equipment is about 3 microns, while this unit can remove almost all suspended solids from the feed slurry.

The mud dewatering system adopts combined structure of multiple mechanical parts with respective functions. The system includes three core parts:
Delivery: Pumping the liquid into the dewatering system and injecting polymer into the flocculation manifold via metering pump.
Blending: Mixing waste liquid from barges or active mud systems, dilution water (if needed) and polymers in proper proportion to flocculate the slurry before centrifugation.
Separation: Separating flocculated slurry into solid sludge and clear reusable liquid through high-speed centrifuge. The configuration of the three parts may vary among different Sludge Dewatering Units, but delivery, blending and separation remain the core functions of any dewatering process.
As shown in Figure 1, waste mud is taken from the active system and pumped into the mud dewatering system, where coagulants and flocculants are added to improve solid-liquid separation. Finally, the flocculated mud is processed by the high-speed centrifuge. The clean liquid free of solids is recycled back to the system, and the separated solids are collected in the cuttings catch tank for final disposal.
Minimize waste generation (liquid waste accounts for more than 75% of total waste volume)
Recycle base fluid for reuse in mud mixing
Reduce water consumption
Lower discharge volume
Improve solids control by removing colloidal solids
The Sludge Dewatering Unit is designed to treat waste mud from waste pits or holding tanks and produce clean water for on-site reuse, as well as solids that are easier to handle and dispose.
The system includes containerized chemical treatment system, high-speed centrifuge, feed pump, electric control system and all supporting pipelines, hoses and gauges. Small workbench is also integrated.
