Mud Gun

  • Mud Gun for drilling fluid tank mixing and circulation. Fixed and 360° rotating models, low- and high-pressure options, with custom lengths and connections.
  • Description

TR Mud Gun is a bottom-mounted mixing gun for drilling fluid tanks. The number of mud guns depends on the tank size and mixing requirements. They can serve as the primary mixing source or work alongside mechanical mud agitators.

Low- and high-pressure mud gun configurations are available. Mud guns are normally connected to the tank mud line, with the number and position determined by the tank layout and required circulation.

Key Features of Mud Gun

  1. 360° rotating head allows the jet direction to be adjusted within the tank.

  2. Polyurethane nozzle provides good wear resistance when handling abrasive drilling fluid.

  3. Wear-resistant nozzle seat helps extend service life under solids-laden conditions.

  4. Reliable sealing supports continuous operation in the mud tank.

  5. Corrosion-resistant surface treatment helps protect the gun body in drilling fluid environments.

Working Principle

Pressurized drilling fluid enters the mud gun through the mud line and passes through the nozzle. The nozzle converts the incoming pressure into a high-velocity jet, creating local circulation around the gun.

The jet keeps drilling fluid moving through areas with limited circulation and helps prevent solids from settling. On rotating models, the gun head can be directed toward different areas of the tank.

Depending on the system design, the pressure source can be a centrifugal pump or a high-pressure drilling pump.

The TRNJQ50-3X and TRNJQ80-3X are 360° rotating mud guns, allowing the jet direction to be adjusted within the tank.

Custom gun length and connection size are available for different tank depths and piping layouts. Nozzle quantity and fixed or rotating configurations can also be specified to suit the mud circulation system.

Jet performance depends on mud density, viscosity, inlet pressure, flow rate, nozzle size, and piping layout. Elbows, tees, valves, and pipe diameter can affect pressure loss before the fluid reaches the nozzle. Sand and other abrasive solids can also accelerate wear on the pump and nozzle.

Applications

Mud guns are installed in drilling fluid tanks at locations that require directed circulation. Common arrangements include:

  • Tank corners and bottom areas

  • Around pump suction points

  • Tank compartments and compartment bottoms

  • Downstream compartments after the final solids control stage

They are used in oil and gas drilling mud systems, solids control systems, and HDD mud recycling systems.
