Mud Gas Separator (MGS) is a gas-separation unit for drilling fluid containing significant free gas. It removes large volumes of free gas from mud returning from the well before the fluid reaches downstream solids-control equipment.
Also known as a gas buster or "Poor Boy Degasser," the MGS is commonly installed in well-control mud systems. In a typical arrangement, it sits downstream of the choke manifold and upstream of the shale shaker.
Unlike a vacuum degasser, the MGS is intended for large volumes of free gas in gas-cut mud rather than finer entrained gas handled later in the mud-treatment process.
Main components: vertical separation vessel, internal baffles, mud inlet, liquid outlet, and top gas outlet.

High free-gas handling capacity: Provides separation volume for gas-laden drilling fluid.
Baffle-based separation: Internal baffles redirect incoming mud and promote gas release from the liquid.
No rotating parts: Minimizing mechanical wear.
Compact vertical arrangement: Provides separation volume without taking up much deck space.
Corrosion protection: Multi-layer external coating protects the vessel surface during field service.
Gas-laden drilling fluid enters through the mud inlet and passes across the internal baffles. Changes in flow direction allow large free gas bubbles to separate and rise upward.
Separated gas exits through the top gas outlet and enters the rig's vent or flare line. The line is routed to a designated safe area as required by the rig arrangement.
Degassed mud discharges through the liquid outlet and returns to the mud system or downstream solids-control equipment.

The MGS is used where drilling returns contain significant free gas, particularly in the following operations:
Well-control operations: Gas separation during circulation following gas influx or kick conditions.
Sour-gas drilling: Suitable for applications where material requirements for H₂S service need to be specified.
Underbalanced drilling: Gas separation from drilling returns containing substantial free gas.

TR manufactures Mud Gas Separators with vessel fabrication, welding, dimensional inspection, nozzle fit-up, surface preparation, and anti-corrosion coating carried out in-house.
The TRZYQ series is supplied in three vessel sizes with different processing capacities and connection sizes to suit drilling mud system layouts.
