How to Select Oilfield Mud Cleaning Equipment?

0

A large amount of drilling fluid (mud) is generated during oilfield drilling. Its stability directly affects drilling efficiency, downhole safety, and operating costs. Improper disposal increases costs and environmental pollution risks. As core equipment for maintaining mud performance, mud cleaning systems separate cuttings, solid particles, and harmful impurities, enabling mud recycling and reducing waste treatment costs. Equipment selection requires comprehensive evaluation of drilling conditions, processing capacity, purification precision, mud properties, and equipment type.

I. Match Drilling Conditions

The prerequisite for selecting mud equipment is to clarify the on-site operating conditions, as different drilling scenarios have significantly different requirements for purification equipment.

(1) Adapt to Drilling Scale & Processing Capacity

Processing capacity (m³/h) must match mud circulation flow to avoid insufficient cleaning or energy waste.

Small-scale drilling (shallow/vertical wells): 20–50 m³/h

Medium-scale projects: 50–150 m³/h

Large-scale continuous operations: ≥200 m³/h (multi-unit parallel available)

(2) Geological Conditions & Purification Requirements

The differences in particle size and composition of rock debris from different geological strata determine the hierarchical configuration logic of the purification equipment. Equipment with appropriate separation precision should be selected based on the particle size range of solid particles in the mud. For example, if it is necessary to separate sand particles of 40-75μm, desander should be selected.

Additionally, the required output moisture content must be considered. Different projects have different requirements for output moisture content. For instance, the sand washing industry requires the finished sand to have a moisture content ≤15%, while tailings dry disposal requires the lower the moisture content, the better. Therefore, when selecting equipment, the dewatering capacity of the equipment must be determined based on specific needs.

Unconsolidated sand/gravel layers (particles ≥74 μm): prioritize high-capacity Shale Shaker with 10–32 mesh screens.

Mudstone/shale layers (10–40 μm particles): equip desilters (50–75 mm hydrocyclones) + centrifuges for 2–15 μm fine particles.

High-pressure gas/deep wells: install vacuum degassers (0.06–0.08 MPa) to prevent gas-cut and kick risks.

(3)Mud Properties

Solid content ratio: The proportion of solid particles in the mud affects the selection of equipment and processing efficiency. Mud with high solid content may require more powerful processing equipment or more complex processing technology.

Mud viscosity: High-viscosity mud may require special design or the addition of chemical agents to reduce viscosity and improve treatment efficiency.

Corrosivity: If the mud is corrosive, equipment made of corrosion-resistant materials should be selected to extend the service life of the equipment.

II. Choose the Right Equipment Type

Shale Shaker: Primary separation for large solid particles, high throughput, easy maintenance.

Hydrocyclone: centrifugal separation for medium-fine particles, small footprint.

Centrifuge: high-speed solid-liquid separation for fine, high-concentration mud.

Filter Press: deep dewatering for dry cake discharge

Dewatering Screen: fine sand recovery and tailings dewatering

Common configurations: Shale Shaker, centrifuge, vacuum degasser, and mud cleaner. Combined systems are recommended for multi-functional performance.
